Breast Reduction (Mammaplasty)

Mammaplasty refers to the surgical procedure to reduce breast size, lift the nipple-areola complex, and remove excess breast tissue. This is typically performed using an incision around the areola, a vertical incision beneath the breast, or an inverted-T incision (anchor pattern).

Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Mastopexy is the procedure used to lift and reshape the breast without removing breast tissue. This is usually done through an incision around the areola or a combination of a periareolar incision and a vertical incision down the lower breast. The goal is to elevate the areola and enhance breast contour.

Breast Augmentation for Small Breasts

There are different methods to increase the size of small breasts, the most common being breast implants or fat transfer. Each technique has its own specific indications and benefits.

Breast Implants

Breast implants come in two types: saline and silicone. Saline implants (filled with sterile salt water) are rarely used today. Silicone implants are more popular and come in two shapes: round and anatomical (tear-drop shaped). Round implants are commonly used to enhance the upper pole of the breast, while anatomical implants are preferred when the goal is to enhance the lower pole.

Implants can be placed in different planes depending on the patient’s anatomy: under the gland (subglandular), under the muscle (submuscular), or beneath the muscle fascia (subfascial). A combined placement—upper part under the muscle and lower part under breast tissue—is known as a "dual-plane" technique.

If there is mild breast sagging, an implant alone may correct it. However, for more significant sagging, a combination of implant placement and a breast lift (mastopexy) is required.

It’s important to note that implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer, nor do they interfere with cancer detection. They also do not contribute to the development of fibrocystic breast conditions.

Today, most breast implants available in Iran are FDA-approved and meet the standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
